The Regal SwanŽ to Implement Feeding and Veterinary Medical Program for Swans at Orlando's Lake Eola

ORLANDO, FLORIDA-August 20, 2007- The Regal SwanŽ, an Orlando-based swan research group, has agreed to consult with the City of Orlando Families, Parks & Recreation Department to implement a feeding, veterinary medical and daily maintenance program for the swans at Lake Eola in downtown Orlando. This partnership is intended to improve the health and wellness of the swans and is being co-sponsored by The Family of Orange Lake Resorts.

Dr. Christopher W. Brown will be the swan veterinarian for Lake Eola. Dr. Brown and Dr. Geoffrey R. Gardner, who is the swan veterinarian for the City of Lakeland, have both served as Orange Lake's swan veterinarians for almost 10 years. The research group plans to improve the nutritional status of the swans immediately, with the installation of swan feeders that were placed along Lake Eola’s shoreline on August 18. Orange Lake is sponsoring this feeder program. Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan participated in the installation of the feeders.

This fall, The Regal SwanŽ will conduct the first swan "round-up" for veterinary medical examinations, vaccinations, and microchipping of all swans on Lake Eola. The swan species inhabiting Lake Eola include Mute Swans and Australian Black Swans. Both species have been present in the area for almost 100 years.

The Regal SwanŽ, Inc. is based in Orlando, Florida and is committed to the humane treatment and veterinary medical care of captive swans. The Regal Swan researchers recently identified bacteria causing swan flocks in the U.K. and the U.S. to turn pink in color and were instrumental in pioneering the use of vaccines to mitigate swan deaths due to botulism and the West Nile Virus.

On July 13, 2007, The Regal SwanŽ researchers traveled to England at the invitation of Her Majesty's Swan Warden, Dr. Christopher Perrins and Her Majesty's Swan Marker, Mr. David Barber to participate in the historical swan-upping along the Thames River. The Regal Swan research team collaborated with swan experts throughout the U.K. and helped capture, vaccinate and exam more than 800 wild swans at the Abbotsbury Swannery. The Regal Swan researchers were also asked to assist in capturing 65 swans along the Thames during an oil spill.

Shirley Bolin, a research team member, has been in Moscow, Russia the past few weeks collaborating with swan keepers at the Moscow Zoo. All research data is being compiled for a veterinary medical book specifically for swans.

The organization has received the National Daily Point of Light Award, as well as the Governor's Point of Light Award, for their dedication to the care of swans. The researchers have authored a book on the care of captive swans, entitled Swan Keeper's Handbook: A Guide to the Care of Captive Swans by Krieger Publishing, released in 2003.
