Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Re: Broken wing (The Regal Swan)

Hi Georgia

You need to get him to a licensed veterinarian experienced in birds and/or waterfowl to have him examined and x-rayed. This is the only way to determine if the wing can be saved, but must be examined and treated ASAP. The longer the wait, the less can be done as time from the injury increases prior to treatment. If the wing has to be amputated, the swan can still live without a wing so it should Not be euthanized.

If the wing is amputated, he will need to live in a very safe secure protected setting, i.e., wildlife sanctuary, personal pond, or other area free from predators. He cannot return to the golf course because he will not be able to protect himself. If he has a mate, she must go with him. Do not separate the pair as they will look for each other, grieve and will not take another swan as a mate. The Regal Swan
