Hi Jessica:

This situation is occurring worldwide at this time of the year. Nesting and mating season is upon us and the swans as well as other birds have returned from their migratory paths to begin the mating/nesting season once again.

The third bird out is probably a cygnet (baby swan or now a juvenile) that has been told by the parents to get lost. The two swans were looking for a new habitat and while flying around probably picked up their own juvenile who tried to come back with them or another juvenile that was looking for a flock.

In any case, junior was abandoned and is old enough to find a mate, a new habitat and start a family of its own. He/she should be just fine. Thanks for caring. If we can ever be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us. The Regal Swan
