Alienation

We have a family of swans (4 cygnets). Recently, one of the parents has died. It appears as though one of the cygnets has assumed the role of the mate for widowed parent. Is this normal?

Also, one of the cygnets has now been signaled out and the entire family is now shunning and attacking the cygnet of it comes near the rest of the family. Why would they do this?

Thanks, Lisa
