There are several possibilities for the swans inappetance and lack of ability to stand. The problem could be from poisoning, bacterial, viral or fungal infection or some time of neurological injury that has caused the weakness in the swan's leg or back end.

The first thing to do is a blood chemistry panel to determine the swan's white cell count and a toxicology panel to assess the possibility of heavy metals such as lead.

In the meantime, provide the swan with 1 mix of about a teaspoon of charcoal granules in approximately 20 ml of water. This will help absorb possible toxins. Start an i.v. drip to prevent dehydration and provide the swan with some nutrients as well flush the swan's system. The charcoal will expedite the process. Also, give a shot of B-12 to spur appetite along with a broad based antibiotic. Tube feed using a nutritional mixture of either Exact or Care for Birds. Number of tube feedings dependent upon swan tolerance and the ability to begin eating on its own. You may need to feed the bird 150 ml 2-3 times daily to start the bird eating.
