I live on a small lake in southeast Michigan. Our lake has a pair of resident swans that mate each year and have a brood of signets each spring. That happened this year.

After about two weeks of bringing her babies out on the lake, the mother suddenly disappeared and hasn't returned. Without the mother her brood disappeared also over the next week or so.

What are the likely causes of her sudden disappearance?

I know there have been sightings of coyotes in this area, so I think of them first.

What do you think could have happened. This pair has been on this lake for many year producing a brood each year.
