Swans after birth of babies: Female and cygnets are not there, male still nearby

I have been observing a swan nest. 2 weeks ago I was there and they were still sitting on the eggs. I went by yesterday and the nest was empty except for a few crows muddling around. The adult male was nearby and periodically swim near the nest and call out and look in. The adult female and babies were not there. Does the female leave with the babies at some point? I don't know when they were born. I was out of town and didn't get to go by last weekend.
Thank you,
Karen
