In Response To: Do swan parents abandon their young? (Kim)

Do swan parents abandon their young? I live by 2 ponds that are very close together. Every year, a pair of swans raise their young on these ponds. This year only one baby swan survived, to be raised by its parents. It is about 6months old and just starting to turn white. Two days ago, I saw the parents on one pond, and heard the baby kind of made a squawk from the other pond. One parent squawk back. Yesterday the baby was alone, sitting in the mud at the edge of the pond. He/she seemed scared and upset. Today the baby was on the pond alone again, and wouldn't come and eat bread I threw in the pond. I have not seen the parents in 2 days. Is this typical? The baby is all alone and I wonder if the parents abandoned it. I'm not sure if it's too young to be alone, and if I can help this baby.
