Hi Paul:
They need approximately 100 yards, approximately 30-40 yards to get airborne and about the same to get lift away from obstacles. You can pinion them, but they need to be done quickly as the older they get, the harder it is on them, especially the anesthesia. Make sure you get an experienced avian (bird) veterinarian that understands anesthesia or this could be fatal. If you can't get them pinioned, you will need to capture them every 4 months to trim their feathers (one wing only) so that they cannot get lift to fly. The Regal Swan
