Hi Steph

No, the swan will not migrate as you will have to have him pinioned (permanently rendered unable to fly) or clipped every 4 months so that he cannot fly. An Australian Black Swan is deemed an exotic (non-native) species and will not only possibly require a permit to buy and maintain, but you will also be under exotic pet laws which require the provision of humane care and veterinary treatment (which regardless of exotic or not, all pet owners must ensure for the health and welfare of all pets and animals).

Since Australian Black Swans are a Southern Hemisphere species, they are not equipped for cold temperatures, especially extreme freezing windy conditions. You will need to provide an indoor pen for winter months with a clean water feature (small indoor pond), with a non-slick non-abrasive zero entrance, surrounded by straw (and mucked daily) with a feeder. The water feature needs to be approximately 2 feet deep and 6 feet wide for one swan (double if two Australian Black Swans or bigger if another species).

The indoor pen must be completely enclosed top to bottom so that no predator can dig under or climb into the pen. The pen will need ample ventilation so no direct drafts, but still supply fresh air and be able to be controlled for extreme temperatures. A small shed or barn would suffice as long as you have plenty of straw for bedding and warmth and no predators can access. The straw must be mucked daily and the water feature and food supply changed daily to prevent pests such as rats and ants. We hope that this info is of benefit. The Regal Swan
