Hi Clara:
The infection needs to be completely healed to ensure that the cygnet does not go septic. You can help rehabilitate the cygnet by allowing it to swim and exercise the leg. The cygnet may not be able to place weight on the injured leg. Water therapy is used so the cygnet swims using the leg which helps strengthen the leg. It would be better to have someone how knows how to conduct this process so that the cygnet does not re-injure the leg, tire too easily and even drown or catch possible pneumonia or other sickness from being overly taxed in the water and cannot warm or dry itself.
We would strongly suggest that you contact Wendy Hermon, at Swan Support 011 44 7572 450967 Wendy works with rehabilitating injured swans and may be able to help you. You need to start immediately with the rehabilitation process or the bird may never be able to use the leg. The cygnet also must have a zero entrance water feature to enter and exit the water so that no further injury can occur. We hope this information is of benefit. The Regal Swan
