Widowed mute swan

A male mute swan was widowed in my community about two weeks ago. For two weeks, he flew back and forth between their wintering pond and the pond where they raised their young. He'd chase off any other swans. Today, he wasn't seen at either pond. After accepting she wasn't come back, would he leave the area and possibly join a group of un-mated swans. I know some swans never take another mate.
Thanks for your knowledge on this matter.
