Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Pinioned Mute Swans left our pond. (Dave)

We have a pair of mute swans we purchased for our 1.5 acre pond in S.E. Wisconsin.

We acquired them in Spring. We feed them corn about once a day. We were out of town for a few days and when we came home the swans were not on the pond. Using a drone we spotted one in a neighbor's pond about 1/4 mile away. We were unsuccessful trying to capture it but to our surprise it was back on our pond the next day. The other swan was seen by a neighbor about 1/2 mile away yesterday on a different larger pond the opposite direction from the pond we found the first swan on. Apparently our neighbor said the swan showed up on his pond about a week ago and came home today so gone about a week. We used the drone again but could not spot it.

Why would they leave the pond and separate and will the second swan return? They are pinioned.
