Hi Ben:

You are very welcome.

Male swans usually build the nest, but since it is mating season and the female will drop eggs (with or without a male), it could still be a female trying to nest.

If you want a reasonably priced swan, you can contact Bob Knox at Knox Swan and Dogs. However, you must find out for sure the gender of the swan as two males can severely injure or kill one another. Two females may fight and that will also be another problem.

There are no guarantees that this swan will take a mate no matter what you do. However, if you should determine gender and get an opposite gendered swan, you will need to keep the new swan in the pen that the present swan is now in so that the new swan can also be acclimated to the pond, you and the other swan. Should you see any signs of defensiveness on behalf of either swan, then you probably are going to have a problem introducing the new swan onto the pond.

Even if you do not see any defensiveness while the swan is in the pen, once the new swan is placed on the pond, you must still watch for any signs of defensiveness for at least a week upon releasing the swan onto the pond. You must have a rescue boat/kayak handy in the event you need to effect a rescue. If there are no signs of defensiveness, both swans should be fine.

You will need to find a swan of the opposite gender as well as the approximate age. A larger older swan can cause injury to a young swan during mating. If this does not work out, you will need to find the new swan a new safe home or contact the seller to see if he will take the swan back if things do not work out. Good luck. Please let us know how this works out. The Regal Swan
