winter coming and swan still on our pond

We live on a medium sized pond in Massachusetts. In late October a large white swan appeared on our pond and has been there since, dipping below the surface most of the day for food. Yesterday the pond had an ice glaze and the swan fell through and got stuck in a hole in the thin ice. We helped her out but the same thing happened again late in the day.
When the pond freezes over in more wintry weather we are afraid he/she won't survive living on the ice with no food source. What should we do? He/she prefers not to come near us, spends solitary days out on the pond. We are puzzled as to what to do before the real cold weather sets in. Hope you can come up with a suggestion. Thank you.
