We are sorry for your loss. However, until you know exactly what killed the first swan, there is no reason to find another as it may succumb to the same cause. Also, there is a possibility that the swan may have died from old age and without knowing their ages, the second swan could meet his/her demise if they were both older birds. Therefore, getting one bird, may not be the answer and a new pair may chase, hurt or severely wound to the point of death the remaining swan as they will fight for territory. The remaining swan depending on gender may or may not take another swan for a mate. This swans should still protect its territory.

Male swans may or may not take another mate (usually they do not) if their mate dies. Female swans may or may not take another mate (usually they will) if their mate dies. Unless you know for sure (genetic DNA sequencing) the remaining swan's gender, any introduction could be detrimental to the remaining swan.

Finally, the most important issue is your state laws. State and federal wildlife officials have intentionally mislead taxpayers into believing that Mute Swans are non-native, invasive, detrimental to the habitat as well as other wildlife and many other misrepresentations. The reason: to kill all Mute Swans by either killing the adults and cygnets and addling eggs so that no other swans are produced. The reason: wildlife officials have been for years eradicating the Mute Swans at taxpayer expense to open wetlands so that they can introduce the larger Trumpeter Swans for Trophy Waterfowl hunting purposes. If you introduce other swans, you may need a permit, you may also inadvertently alert your remaining swan to the officials and they may try to kill it. So, you may have to hope that other wild swans find your lake following the migratory season as they look for their own new habitat.
