Hi Kelly:

There is no way to use a trap or other such device. You will need to capture by hand or net using a boat/kayak, etc.

However, since you are from Michigan, know that the Michigan DNR has prohibited veterinarians/wildlife facilities etc., from helping Mute Swans. They are instructed that they must kill the bird. So, even if you capture it and try to seek assistance from a qualified vet or rehabber, it will be more than likely killed.

Michigan DNR is adamant about killing Mute Swans based upon no scientific research. The misrepresentations they continue spouting to taxpayers such as non-native, aggressive, invasive, detrimental to the habitat, sub-aquatic vegetation and other wildlife is just that, false.

The reason they try to convince politicians, media and citizens that Mute Swans are bad is so that they public will buy into the killing program. Michigan DNR is killing all Mute Swans to open their habitat to introduce the larger Trumpeter Swan in habitats they have never existed. The reason is so that the larger Trumpeter Swans can be used for Trophy Waterfowl hunting purpose to increase the Michigan DNR's budget through the more expensive trophy hunting permits.

So, unfortunately, in your state, there is no such thing as assistance for a sick or injured Mute Swan. The best thing you can do is leave it alone and keep its presence secret. Otherwise, DNR officials and their volunteers will find the swans and kill them by decapitating the adults and stomping on the cygnets so you can not hear the swans being killed as you would if they were being shot.
