Hi Ann:

When introducing a pair of swans to a new habitat, they should always be placed in an introductory pen. The pen should be 1/2 on the bank and 1/2 in the water with a zero entrance (no steep or abrasive areas), completely enclosed top to bottom so that predators cannot dig under or climb over into the pen. A feeder should be placed in the pen to acclimate them as to what type of feeder system you are using. The swans should be kept in the pen for approximately 2 weeks in order for the swans to acclimate to the new habitat, the feeder and you. Then, once they are released onto the pond, they are used to the new habitat and feeding system and will not wander.

Without the use of an introductory pen, the swans may wander in order to try returning to their old habitat. This will leave them open to predation by wild and domestic predators (i.e., coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, dogs and cats). We hope this information is of benefit. The Regal Swan
