Are you absolutely sure you have a male and a female? If they have not been DNA sequenced, and whomever you received them from just probed, what you think you have may not be reality.

Sometimes, swan breeders and owners will use probing to determine gender. However, unless the genitalia is completely formed (usually 1 year of age), there is no certainty. This is why we suggest a feather (with DNA on end) be submitted to a licensed DNA Sequencing lab.

If you have two males, there is a possibility the other swan is chasing him from the area. If you in fact have a male or female, there is something in the pond that is causing him to leave (predator, lack of food, some sort of disturbance--mowing, weed eating, spraying, etc.).

The only thing you can do to keep him from roaming is to build a pen (completely enclosed top to bottom so that predators cannot dig under or climb over into the pen). The pen should be 1/2 on land and 1/2 in water with a zero entrance. A feeder should be kept in the pen. Keep him in the pen for approximately a week and see if this might help settle him and keep him in the area. If this still does not work, you need to determine what is causing him to walk. If this behavior does not improve even after being penned, then you may need to find him another home with an enclosed habitat. Just be careful who you contact as the Ohio DNR and other wildlife officials are killing Mute Swans to free habitats for boating, jet skiing and the introduction of the larger Trumpeter Swans for Trophy Waterfowl hunting purposes. This is the way that these wildlife entities procure money for their budgets, hunting, boating and other waterway usage permits.

In any case, you cannot allow him to continue roaming as predators can attack and kill him, he could get injured (even killed if walking across roadways) and other potential hazards could be detrimental to him. The Regal Swan
