Hi Hadassah:

Swans are extremely resourceful when it comes to moving from one area to another looking for a better habitat especially when safety and food resources are required.

Swans, especially Trumpeter Swans are extremely strong birds and can walk long distances in a very short time. They can navigate wetlands finding even the smallest streams to float and lead their cygnets. Even through streams that are not visible to humans in dense wetlands. In some cases, the young cygnets will hitch a ride on mom's back to rest and allows the parents to cover much more ground in a short time. If the cygnets are small enough, mom can even fly short distances with the young on her back. The Regal Swan
