Hi Kathleen

You will need a couple of kayaks and a boat if possible to herd the swan back onto land so that you can either capture it or force it to walk back to your pond. You need to do this quickly so the swan is not attacked by predators such as alligators, etc., that may not be in your pond.

If the swan can fly, this is going to be difficult. If the swan cannot fly, then it has just walked to the other pond due to migration season (and yes, captive swans will get the urge to wander during this time) or it has been scared or disrupted by something occurring near or in your pond. Could the swan have been chased by a dog or human from your pond?

If you can herd the swan back to your house, we would suggest that you capture it and place it indoors for two days so the wandering urge dissipates and the swan thinks twice about leaving. If you see it trying to leave again, immediately capture it and place it indoors overnight. It will only take once or twice being captured and held indoors overnight to get the idea that it needs to stay in its own pond. The Regal Swan
