Lone swan watches over the goslings

Hi there,

I live in New Jersey and I was hoping someone would be able to give me some information about a lone swan that lives in the lake near my house. This fellow (or lady) showed up about two years ago and has spent most of his time in the lake, sometimes hanging out with the Canadian geese and one white goose that migrate here every year but mostly just swimming around. He stayed through last winter as well, just powered his way through the ice and kept on going. The geese don't seem to mind him, they let him next to the chicks. I don't think I've ever seen him fly but he seems to be in good health.

On a side note, would anyone happen to know about a white goose sort of joining a Canadian goose flock, he (she) always shows up with them and is integrated enough into the flock that he'll watch over the chicks when their parents are busy and he goes off when they do.

Just curious as to the behavior behind this, if anyone has ever seen this before.

Thanks
