Male mute swan disappeared from the nest/lake

we have a pair of mute swans on our lake in nh. The female laid her eggs 4 weeks ago. The male has not been seen on the lake in 4 days. It is our understanding that they mate for life. The female is still nesting and feeding, why would the male disappear suddenly?
