Swans in field without water, eating grass

Hi. I live in north east Scotland. There has been a large flock of swans in a local field for the last couple of weeks. Around 35 were counted today, including some that are clearly last years cygnets. There is no water in the field or local area. The swans appear to be peacefully eating the grass. I thought they were a water bird, why have they taken up residence in this field?
