Hi Christine

Did something scare him, or is he sick or injured? You need to capture him and exam him to make sure nothing is wrong. If you are unsure, get him to a licensed avian/waterfowl veterinarian for an exam. If nothing is wrong, then take him back to the nest. If he still leaves, there is something wrong. You may need to keep him inside for a couple of days. The problem is that if he continues sitting in the grass a predator will attack and possibly kill him. If he cannot protect the female which is his job, she is also susceptible to a predator's attack. He also needs to guard the nest so the female can leave the eggs to eat, bathe and take a break from nesting.

If you cannot find a veterinarian or someone to help, contact Wendy Hermon at Swan Support in Datchet.
