Hi Rick:
If the swan is going in circles and not eating or drinking, it has nothing to do with grief. Birds and animals are not wired to grieve, but to continue to perpetuate the flock and species.
There are several possibilities.
1. The swan was attacked by the same predator that took the eggs and is injured, possibly on the side or legs.
2. The swan was bitten by a venomous snake, which could have also taken the eggs.
3. The swan is suffering from some type of illness or infection, such as ear mites.
In any case, the swan should be captured and immediately taken to a license veterinarian experienced with birds/waterfowl for diagnosis and treatment. Failure to eat can cause the bird's health to go downhill quickly and place it in dire straits from serious dehydration and other problems possibly leading to death. The Regal Swan
