Male trying to drown female mate when female chases baby away

I have a pair of swans that are nesting and we are seeing strange behavior. The female is chasing last year's baby out of the pond; when she does this the male chases his mate and tries to drown her or flog her, in or out of the pond. Is this normal? The pair has 3 eggs and the male is sitting most of the time during the day especially, is this normal? We have 3 ponds and last year's baby stays away for the most part, but when the baby - we think it's a female - goes to the pond the mother is in, that's when all heck breaks loose. Thanks
