Hi James:

We are so sorry about your loss. If a swan stops eating, this is a sign that something is terribly wrong with the bird. She may have been unable to keep warm, dry, water repellent or had a serious infection. The moving of the feeder into the water may help.

How old are the swans? There is no guarantee that he will take on another mate. You will need to place the new female swan in a pen (1/2 on land and 1/2 in water completely enclosed top to bottom to prevent predators from digging under the pen or climbing over the pen to access the swan). A feeder should be placed in the pen. The female swan should be kept in the pen for approximately 2 weeks to allow her time to acclimate to you, the feeding system, the male and the habitat. Should any signs of aggression be exhibited by the male, the new swan needs to be given to a good home. If the male is too aggressive towards her, he could seriously hurt or even kill her. We hope that this information is of benefit to you. Please let us know how this situation progresses.

If you are looking for another mate, we would suggest Bob Knox from Knox Swans to help you with the transition of adding a new mate for the male. Bob will be able to offer suggestions to help you with the decision of adding another swan. His phone is (847) 875-3947. The Regal Swan
