Hi Linda:
If the swan was paddling upside down before its demise, something was extremely wrong. Either it was severely sick, injured or died from old age. The paddling upside down was indicative that the swan was trying to stay afloat and not drown, but any number of reasons could be the cause of its initial problem, i.e., being shot by gun or other hunting device, toxins, infection, predation, drowning, inability to properly oil its feathers for water repellency/floatation, choking, old age, entanglement on or in something, etc. It is difficult to determine what could have caused the sudden death unless a necropsy was conducted.
