In Response To: Male Swan Alone Again, Will the Partner Return? (Lynne)

Hello,

We live on a small lake in New Jersey. Our female swan was hit by a car about 4 years ago and killed. leaving our pinioned male alone until Fall 2016. That Fall a pair of wild swans and their five cygnets flew to our lake. All left early last Spring with the exception of one that our male accepted as a mate/friend. We were unsure as to the sex of the cygnet but they were bonded nonetheless. They stayed together all summer and fall. However, with the severely cold temperatures that the northeast suffered around and just past the holidays, we were struggling to keep the water open even with an extensive aeration system. We witnessed the wild swan fly away one afternoon leaving the pinioned male crying and in despair. The lake has open water and he is safe from predators but he is alone once more. During the day and some nights he has the company of geese and ducks.

We are wondering if there is a chance that the partner that flew away will return once the weather improves or Spring comes?

Thanks,
Lynne
