Hi Barbara:

Are you sure she is actually a wild swan and can fly? She may be pinioned which means a portion of the wing is amputated so that the bird cannot fly out and start a feral population. We would suggest that if this is a private pond, this may be the case.

Considering you are contacting us from Michigan, we would also suggest that Michigan DNR may have conducted or required the pinioning. In most cases, Michigan DNR will kill the birds, so they are going to be of no help should a rescue be required. In fact, in some cases, they may require veterinary care or rehabilitation be withheld and the swans killed.

The goal of the Michigan DNR (at taxpayer expense) is to kill all Mute Swans in Michigan while introducing the larger Trumpeter Swans for Trophy Waterfowl hunting. This is how Michigan DNR makes its money, through hunting and a Trophy hunting permit will cost more than a traditional hunting permit. This will increase the amount of money that the Michigan DNR makes from offering Trophy Waterfowl hunting. The Regal Swan
