Ask the Swan Specialist

Do you know the circumstances of the parent's disappearance? Did you see them take off or were they gone overnight? How long have the parents been gone?
We ask because it is getting close to to migratory season and the parents just left the cygnet if it could not fly. This situation is not normal and the cygnet will not survive the winter without leaving extreme inclement weather.
If the parents just left, there is the possibility something may have scared them and they will return in the next couple of days.
The final scenario is not good. Many states and federal wildlife officials are killing the Mute Swans under the hoax that they are non-native, invasive and detrimental to the environment. All of these misrepresentations are to get public opinion to turn against the Mute Swans and not question the killing program. When in fact, the real cause of the killing program is to remove the Mute Swans, open their habitat so that the larger Trumpeter Swans can be introduced for Trophy Waterfowl hunting purposes. Trophy Waterfowl permits are more expensive and are being used to enhance dissipating wildlife budgets.
If wildlife officials killed the parents and the cygnet escaped, they may return to kill the cygnet. If the cygnet is not targeted, it may not survive the winter, but if you contact wildlife officials to help, the cygnet will be killed. We are sorry to tell you that the odds are not good for the cygnet, but unfortunately state and federal wildlife agencies are about the money, not conservation as hunting groups and permits fund their budgets. Until their is a public outrage against the killings, this program will continue. Unfortunately, a portion of taxpayer money is also being wasted on this non sustainable program, and politicians refuse to go against hunting organizations since they have large pacs with a lot of money to fund the politicians.
We hope we are wrong about this last scenario. Please let us know if the parents return. The Regal Swan
