In Response To: Re: Lame swan (The Regal Swan)

Hi Mel

The swan is probably in some pain and reluctant to use leg for this reason. This is why it is so important to allow him to swim and exercise his leg. The swan may have an infection so we would suggest the veterinarian check its temperature and white blood cell count. If in doubt, the swan may need an antibiotic to ensure that any infection is controlled before the swan is released back into its habitat. With some additional therapy while on a painkilker and antibiotic, the swan should be able to heal and return to its habitat. Just ensure that the swan is thourghly soaked several days before its release to ensure that the swan's oil gland is working and the feathers are properly oiled for water repellency. You might soak him every other day while he is in rehab so you can see if he is able to properly dry and preen himself. The Regal Swan
