Hi Katrina
Introduced swans should be placed in an acclimation pen (1/2 in water, 1/2 on land with zero entrance to prevent foot or leg injuries (non-abrasive and non-slick substrate, completely enclosed top to bottom to prevent access by predators, with feeder inside). The time in the pen will allow the swans to acclimate to you, the feeding system you use, as well as familiarize themselves with the habitat and other waterfowl/wildlife. The swans should stay in the pen for approximately 1-2 weeks to familiarize themselves with you and feeding. If the birds are placed directly on the new pond with no acclimation, they may never accept you, the food or feeding system and may actually begin to walk/wander away from the habitat which would leave them in dangerous situations from wild and domestic predators.
