Hi Donna

Without a necropsy, there is no concrete way of knowing exactly what caused the swan’s death. However, short of having something stuck in its throat, there is a good possibility that the swan had some type of infection such as pneumonia.You might want the whole flock (adults and cygnets) checked by a veterinarian experienced in birds/waterfowl so that the other swans do not catch something if the cygnet was contagious.
