Hi Shannon:

The age of banding depends on the swan species. Which species are you considering banding? Are you using a leg, wing or neck band? Metal or plastic?

The type of crate depends on how it is used. If you are transporting a swan, we recommend neither as we use a veterinary sling which contains the wings and prevents injury. However, if no sling is available, a large animal carrier (plastic-NOT wire) can be used, but again, you risk injury to the wings if the bird starts swinging. Wood is not recommended due to the potential of splintering.

If you are using the crate for reintroduction, then neither of these materials are appropriate. A reintroduction pen such as a dog run (enclosed top to bottom to prevent predators from digging under or climbing into the pen, ˝ on water and ˝ on land with feeder inside) should be used. The swan should be kept in the pen approximately 2 weeks to acclimate itself to its habitat. If the swan is from this habitat, then reintroduction may not be required. Please let us know which swan species you are working with and the type of band you are considering using. The Regal Swan
