What happens to eggs in the wild if the mother dies

I'm watching a movie on swans where the mother dies but they called fish and wildlife. They picked up the clutch and three of five of eggs made it. But if they never interfered, would the father have stepped up and hatched them or another mom swan taken them in or would they just have died.
