Re: How long do cygnets need to stay with mother, and when to clip wings

Hi Cindy:

The cygnets (baby swans) need to stay with their mom for at least 6 months. A licensed veterinarian (preferably waterfowl/avian veterinarian---Univ. of Knoxville has this specialty in their veterinary college) will be able to pinion the cygnets at 1-3 weeks of age. This must be completed at 1-3 weeks of age so that the nerves, bones and cartilage are not formed and anesthesia is not required. If the procedure is conducted after that time, then it is very stressful and difficult on the birds especially when anesthesia is used.

Should you need a good home for the cygnets after 6 months, please contact us and we will find a good home. Thank you and your shelter for caring for the swans. The Regal Swan
