There are no guarantees that she will re-pair with another swan. Usually, females will re-pair, but it is a totally individual attribute. If you do not want to be responsible for cygnets (baby swans) every year and the possible state license you may need for breeding, then anothet female swan would be the answer.

Now, having said this, there are other issues that must be considered.

How did the male die? If by predator, how are you going to protect your swan and the new swan? If you cannot guarantee their safety, you will just continue getting a new swan for any one that survives.

Are there other waterfowl on your pond, i.e., ducks, geese, herons, egrets etc.? If so, your swan will do just fine alone as she will still have other waterfowl as company.

If you choose to get another swan, you will need to build an acclimation pen for the new swan. The pen should be totally enclosed top to bottom so no predators can dig under or climb over the pen to access the swan. The pen should be 1/2 in water and 1/2 on the bank, zero entrance with no abrasive substrate to harm the swan's legs or feet.a feeder should be placed in the pen.

The new swan will need to stay in the pen for approximately 2 weeks. You cannot just place a new swan onto the pond as both swans could get seriously injured or killed from possible fights. The pen will allow time for the new swan to acclimate to its new habitat, you and your swan as well as your swan to get used to the new swan. If you see any signs of aggression from either swan, this introduction of the new swan onto your pond is not going to work. You will need to to return the swan or find it another safe secure home.

If you see no aggression, then you can release the new swan onto the pond after 2 weeks. Again, you will need to look for any signs of aggression and place the swan in another home if needed. You will also need a boat or kayak ready in the event a rescue is needed.

Again, re-pairing is an individual attribute so there are no guarantees if a swan will or will not re-pair. In any case, your swan will do just fine if you choose not to get another swan. The Regal Swan
