Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Re: Male Mute Swan appears to have a sore leg (The Regal Swan)

Hi Anna

A long as he is eating, able to get up and down non-steep banks and protective of the family, we would suggest watching him closely for a couple of days to ensure he is not getting worse or suffering. If after this time he is still limping, you need to get him to a veterinarian and check for an injury you may not see via an x-ray.

If it is a soft tissue injury he may need to be kept in a safe secure setting so that predators cannot access him and he is on straw and a non slip surface to heal. The veterinarian can also prescribe Metacam which will act as a pain killer and can reduce swelling. Just be sure to keep him indoors for a couple of days if he is on Metacam to see how he acts on the medication. Metacam may make him drowsy so you don't want him in the water until you are sure he can safely get out of the water. The Regal Swan
