Hi Beth:

Sometimes, the parents will oust the cygnets once they turn white in color. At that time, the cygnets become rivals and the parents no longer view them as their cygnets. This is just nature. Normally, the parents will oust everyone at the same time, but if the oldest hatching (cygnet) turns white sooner, learns to fly sooner, is the adventurous type, especially if it is the first male hatched, the cygnet itself will begin to remove itself from the other young birds and scope out the habitat and its surroundings. This is normal behavior and no need to worry. Once migration begins, the whole family will rejoin and take off together for the flight to warmer wintering grounds. The Regal Swan
